From 1980
through 1981, I worked nights (6 p.m.-11 p.m.) at WZAT (a.k.a. "Z102"), a Top 40 FM
station in Savannah, Georgia. (AM Top 40 WSGA was its sister station, and was
located on the other side of the building that housed WZAT.) Other WZAT jocks at
that time included Burl Womack, Nancy Brooks, Brady McGraw
(who was the PD), Ray Williams (who succeeded Brady as PD), and Steve
Austin. Jerry Rogers was the GM of both WSGA and WZAT. This page
contains pics from that
period. |

John Quincy with the WSGA/Z102 van and mascots
I always felt sorry for the poor folks that had to wear those mascot suits in
the blistering hot Savannah summertime! |

John Quincy in the Z102 control room
You can't see it, but the studio had a 1979 Autogram rotary-pot board (the one
with 10 pots and remote starts under each knob) and a pair of ITC triple-deck
cart machines. Pictured behind me are a Revox reel-to-reel deck, a couple of
Technics turntables, and all of the commercial carts. All music was on cart
(those carts were on the back wall), so the turntables were only used during the
"Breakfast with Burl" part of the morning show (when Burl played gospel music!)
and to playback syndicated countdown and specialty shows, which were provided on
vinyl albums.) You had to be real careful pulling carts when the turntables were
in use, or you'd drop one on the record. (Not that I ever did that of course!) |

John Quincy poses on the Z102 side of the building
If you took the stairs to the left, you'd go to the Z102 production studio, the
Weis Cinema offices, and the WSGA side of the building. Taking the stairs to the
right would lead you to the Z102 control room and a small office. |
