WSSX, Charleston, SC Control Room

WSSX Airstaff at Christmas 1983 Party

This shot was taken at WSSX (a.k.a. "95SX") in Charleston, South Carolina, where I worked from 1981 until 1985. The first control room had a rotary-pot McMartin board and a pair of ITC triple deck cart machines. When the control room moved, we got a rotary-pot Gates "President" board. Along with the aforementioned pair of ITC triple-deck cart machines, the control room sported the Ampex reel-to-reel you see behind me. When I started there, the station had a "Top Tracks" format, which was a Top 40/AOR hybrid. (Lots of Led Zeppelin, Journey, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Allman Brothers...) After a couple of years it had morphed into a true CHR. Bill Martin was the PD who hired me. Brian Phillips was the PD when I left to go "across the street" to WXTC.
